Trees as Smog-Killers
Engineers, builders and urban designers are beginning to recognize that the small green leaf is one of natures as most amazing technicians as a preserver of the enviroment. Leaves "breath in" carbon dioxide and other combustible gases released by vehicles and industry, and turn them back to the atmosphere as oxygen. Their hairy surfaces catch particles and keep soot from saturating the air. They also smother noise.
Planners are giving more emphasis, as a result, to having trees and scrubbery along highways, near airports and industrial sites, and in residential areas. "Greenbelt" of hedges, trees, scrubs, grass and vines along busy thorough-fares have been found in some cases to tune down the sound of heavy traffic by as much as 60 percent.
